You already know sleep is critical to survival.
But, are you making it a high priority in your life?
All too often, we forget the importance of rest and sleep. We usually treat it as a commodity that we can exchange for something that will give us more value, like working more to get ahead, binge-watching your favourite show on Netflix, etc.
But, it is taking its toll. There are long-term consequences of poor sleep or lack of sleep. And understandably, there is a strong relationship between sleep and stress. For good or bad.
Sleep is a critical process during which our body regulates everything and repairs and heals itself. It slows down ageing and protects us from diseases. HGH (Human Growth Hormone) is released by the brain into the bloodstream during sleep and its release is part of the repair and restoration function of sleep. The major period of HRH release is in the first period of stage 3 sleep during the night.
Sleep is a powerful stress reducer. Following regular sleep, routine calms and restores the body, improves concentration, regulates mood, and sharpens judgment and decision-making. You are a better problem solver and are better able to cope with stress when you’re well-rested. Lack of sleep, on the other hand, reduces your energy and diminishes mental clarity.
