That’s nearly 5% of the world’s population. In fact, depression is so prevalent that many people rely on antidepressants to cope with their feelings, with over 7% of the population in the United States alone using medication to manage their mental health.

In Australia, depression significantly impacts the population. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that in the 2017–18 period, 10.4% of Australians aged 18 and over experienced depression or depressive symptoms, with higher rates observed among females (12.3%) compared to males (8.2%). Moreover, the Black Dog Institute highlights that one in seven Australians will experience depression in their lifetime, making it a leading cause of disability in the country. These statistics underscore the pressing need for effective mental health support and interventions across Australia.
